The only problem is the long "i" pronunciation, as your grandmother said it. Unfortunately, that's a common pronunciation here in the U.S. It's used more in the South and in rural parts of the country. I can't stand it that way.
The Spanish / French / Italian pronunciation, "ee-NESS" or even "ee-NEZ," is so much prettier. (No offense intended against your grandmother.)
