William became king of Umbresey at the tender age of 13, when his father was killed in battle against the neighboring kingdom of Arcana. To prevent further bloodshed, the late king's ministers, acting as young William's regents, hastily arranged for the boy to marry Princess Aurelia, the eighth and only surviving child of the Arcanian ruler. It was a very long engagement, during which time the two kingdoms became peaceful and friendly relations were restored. William and Aurelia married on William's 18th birthday, which was also the day of his coronation.
