I like nicknames that come from the child's name. My favorite girls name right now is Elizaveta, and I'd use Elya as a nickname because it's a Russian diminutive, and it sounds nicer than Ellie.

I generally prefer nicknames that have a story behind them, and aren't from the child's name, though.
