It is 1945.
Ylva is doing well. She has developed arthritis, so its hard for her to get around these days. Her family members help her out a lot, though, so she doesn't have to worry.
Jonny Kaminski is fifteen. He has grown into a bright young man who wants to study medicine. He is a great help to Ylva and is very close to her.
Rike and Matthew's family has had their ups and downs over the past five years. Matthew went to enlist in the Army to fight in the War, but was told that he was too old. Go figure. Three of Rike and Matthew's sons did enlist in the Army, however. Their eldest was wounded in France, but a slight limp is all that remains of his physical injury. Matt Jr. married his long-time girlfriend just last year when he returned from the War. Charlie was killed in the fighting on D-Day, and he left behind his wife Violet and their (now) two year old son. Lizbeth and Richard Morris got married last year, and Lizbeth just welcomed twin girls! Jamie spent two years fighting in France, and was relieved when the War was over and he could return home to his wife. He and Mary have since had a daughter. Helen is engaged to a quarry worker named Scott Davis. Helen is a schoolteacher. Ben enlisted in the Marines, and is really enjoying the life of a soldier--especially since there's no War going on now. Joey plans to follow Ben's footsteps, and Mickey wants to work in business somewhere.
Andy and Minnie's family remains mostly unchanged. Minnie's son Sam was drafted into the Army, but never saw combat. Sam returned to his wife and son and now owns a fairly large shipping business. Dee, Sarah, Leila, and Sharon are growing up fast and becoming lovely young ladies.
Johan and Mary were shocked when they found themselves expecting a baby in 1942. Johan had just been drafted to go to France. When he returned in 1944, his daughter was two years old and very delighted to meet her father.
Jorgen was not drafted to fight in the War, but he did a good job running the furniture store in Johan's absence. He and Hanne have built a wonderful life together. Their daughter Moa is nineteen. She is returning to Sweden to go to college there. Nils also wishes to return to Sweden. The other children are happy in America, and are growing up very quickly.
Sven and Carrie have one son. They have had two miscarriages, and Sven believes Carrie might be unable to have more children. Her labor with Harry was difficult and she lost a lot of blood during his birth. Instead, Sven and Carrie have decided to focus on Harry and give him everything he could ever want or need.
Freja and Thomas have still not had any children of their own, despite being married for ten years. However, they have adopted four children who needed homes. Michael is 13 years old. He has been an orphan for as long as he can remember--his family victims of the Great Depression. Michael is a nice boy who dreams of becoming an artist. Violet and Naomi are sisters. Violet is 10 and Naomi is 7. Their parents were killed in an influenza outbreak in New York City. The girls were shipped across the country, looking for a home. They are very shy and quiet. Benny is 3. He was born out of wedlock to a local girl who gave him to Freja and Thomas because she knew they would give him a good home. Benny is rambunctious and clever.
Kristin married a man named George Neely in 1941. George had been previously married, and brought four children to Kristin's family. In a "mine-yours-and-ours" sort of scenerio, Kristin and George are now expecting their first child together.
