DD: Elina Merit (April 21, 1913)(17)Location: various places, USAIt is 1930.The Lindgrens have not yet felt too many effects from the depression in America, though they are starting to cut back on some unnecessary things. The furniture business is still going strong, though some customers are beginning just to barter for what they buy instead of paying cash. This doesn't bother Erik at all, since the farming wasn't his strong point (the plants all died before they were a foot tall). Karin and Taras are still living in Pennsylvania, though Taras has been laid off. The money Karin makes from nursing part-time is all they have to live on, currently. Early in the year, Karin gave birth to a little boy, Jonathan Taras. Her daughters were delighted that they had a little brother to love and adore. Rike and Matthew are fairly secure financially, though they now have eight children to clothe, feed, and love. All of the Wells children look similar--light brown hair and bright green eyes. It is not difficult to tell that they are a family. Andy's business is going well, and he and Minnie were married early in 1926. Acting didn't really work out for Minnie, but she is happy that Andy can provide for her and Sam (and the baby on the way). Johan and Jorgen have separated for the time being. Jorgen returned to Sweden as soon as news of the depression reached Oregon. He has since written that he found work in a print shop and does some woodworking on the side. Johan is dating an immigrant girl named Mary Kjellson. Mary's parents emigrated to the United States when she was seven. Johan and Mary hope to get married someday. Sven went to New York City in 1926 to study medicine. He plans on graduating from medical school next year and returning to Oregon. In the meantime, Betsy Foster has married another fellow. Sven was upset that Betsy couldn't wait for him, but understands that things change. Freja still lives with Rike and her family, but works as a schoolteacher for elementary age children. Freja would like to get married someday, but hasn't found the right guy yet. Kristin moved to northern California to try her hand at acting, and lives with Andy and his wife. She has not had any success yet, but is dating a young fellow named James Lawson who says he can get her auditions. Elina is the only Lindgren child still living with her parents. She is itching to move to California with Kristin, but Erik won't let her leave until she turns 18, which is soon. Elina still wants to sing on the radio. She has a good voice, but her parents don't believe she'll be good enough and are trying to encourage her to try a more practical occupation. However, Elina is determined to sing.
