Helen was from a well-respected family and was one of four daughters. She was the second youngest and generally accepted as the quietest and best behaved - until she suddenly fell pregnant, and was unsure of the father, bringing shame on the family. Helen was forced to marry Albert Tate, the son of a family friend, and when James was born it was decided that he would be considered Albert's son. Albert is an intellectual and is quite shy, and Helen is a music lover and just as introverted as her husband. They love each other mostly because they were told to, but get along quite well.
