Mah-rit (long aah sound, as in the word "car") is how Marit is pronounced in Scandinavia. It's quite a common name, actually. In Finland, it is spelled Maarit (with two a's to indicate the long vowel sound).
The future queen of Norway (wife to Crown Prince Haakon) is called Mette-Marit.
