After a year living with us, Katya and Io, which Iosif now goes by, we have become a family. At the beginning, the twins would rarely leave the sight of one another and took quite a while to speak English fluently. They did open up more to Christopher, as he spoke Russian and could converse with them early on. He also helped them greatly to improve on their English. The children did too- we labeled everything in the home with both the English and Russian words on them- so Damian, Anika, and I were able to learn some Russian as well!
Katya has taken on the big sister role of the family, which she loves. She is able to lead both Io and Damian along with Anika and instruct them in games and activities. She leads quite a number of arts and crafts with them. She continues to read all the time and has taken on the role as the one to read to Anika before she sleeps each night. Because of this, the two have formed quite a strong bond. Katya has done quite well in school and has made quite a number of friends. She does ice skating, Girl Scouts, and both her and Io have piano lessons and attend church with out family.
Io has had a much more difficult time in school and working really hard to learn to read. Christopher spends an hour or more every day with him to help him. He also spends quite a lot of his day with the ELL department at his school. Although not doing well academically, he has fit in great with Christopher, Damian, and the neighborhood boys. He loves the outdoors and is out with Damian all the time. Io has joined Boy Scouts and is taking a painting class- which he loves and is great at!
It been a long year, but definitely worth the challenge. Thank you for making our family our family!
