[Opinions] Do you go by your first name, middle name or nickname?
I've heard of parents giving their children middle names in case the child wanted to use it later in life. Just wondering if anyone uses their mn as their fn.
If you go by a nn, is it based on one of your given names or an incident or personality trait or something else entirely?
Thanks.

I would really like to go by my middle name but I know for everyone else it would be awkward if I started going by it instead of Madison. By the way, it's Rein. :)
Majority of the time I'm Fran. I introduce myself as Fran and I only really use Frances in business/official contexts. I do love Frances though and wish I was called it more.
I go by my first name - some of my oldest friends shorten it to Shiv/Shev occasionally, but I never think of myself as that.
My mother goes by her second name, Ita. She was Elizabeth for the first few years; then her mother decided that she didn't like Elizabeth because people were shortening it. Ironically my grandmother's first name was Ita but she went by Addie. My father went by a shortened version of his name always.
My ex-boss called his son after himself - James. However my boss went by Jimmy and him and his wife didn't like the way everyone called his son "Little Jimmy" so they began to use his second name Dillon.

I think it would be very strange if I went by my middle name, seeing how it is also a surname (Hart) I mostly go by my first name, Natalie. Often, my friends and boyfriend call me Nata for short. My brother often calls me Saff (short for Saffron, which is an online nickname I use a lot), and in some online communities I am called Tethys.
I go by my first name in full, and I correct anyone who shortens it to Jenn or Jenny. My husband, on the other hand, goes exclusively by his nickname.
I go exclusively by my first name, Julia. I don't have a nn, and I don't like when people assume that Julie and Julia are interchangeable. They aren't! (yes, I realize that my user-name here has juli in it; it doesn't bother me when I'm online, just in person)
A lot of my aunts and uncles go by their middle names, but I only know the reasoning behind one of them. My uncle William Christopher was born on Christmas day, and so all the nurses started calling him Mr. Christmas, which shortened to Mr. Chris. My grandparents had intended to call him Will, but the nn Chris stuck, so they gave in!

I go by my first name. There aren't any nicknames for my first name (well, real ones anyway).
My grandmother goes by her middle name. So did two of her brothers.

My name is Kaitlyn, but I've always gone by Katie.
I go by my first name at work and I did in school as well. I go by my nickname (Mandy) with family and close friends. I am sometimes still called Shark at work based on an incident. I am called Mandable by my extended family on my paternal side. My dad nicknamed me Binks as a baby. It doesn't have a story behind it, but my parents call me that. My boyfriend can't figure out what to call me: Amanda, Ama, Mandy (he doesn't like this), Monkey (based on personality).
I have an aunt who goes by the nickname of her middle name! Her name is Lois Jean, but she only goes by Jeanie.

I go by my first name most of the time, occasionally by a nick name.
I go by my nickname, Lola 99% of the time. When in professional situations, I use Lola too, but then, I'm an artist (former graphic designer who finally got her degree in Interior design). I use my full name (Laura) when I'm dealing with people other than in business. The school, for example, or the scouts, stuff like that. But even then, the individuals I know well, call me Lola. Anything else sounds kind of odd to me anymore. I've been Lola for 37 years.
I go by my nickname, Missy, short for Melissa.
However my sister calls me Mel which i hate, or Melly when she's in a good mood.
People used to call me by my middle name, Elizabeth- which i later found out was because when i tried to tell people my full name "Melissa Elizabeth" it came out as "Miss Elizabeth" I was only 3, that's quite a mouthful for a child haha.

I go by either Joan (my FN) or Joanie. My best friend calls me Joan because she's always loved my name, after all she did name her daughter after me. Most of my family and old friends call me Joanie, but since I started college I started introducing myself as Joan. When I was little my mom would call me Rosie (my MN is Roseann), but it never stuck.
I like how my mom came up with my brother's name. His full name is Daniel Seay (prn. SEE). She wanted to call him Seay, but everyone kept saying "See what?", so she called him D.Seay instead (like D.C.). I really like it, though some people think it sounds weird.

I go by a nickname most of the time. My first name is a variant of Yolanda and my nn is Londa.
In professional situations, I always introduce myself by my full name though.

I go by my middle name, Natalia, instead of my first name, Sophie. I'm still officially Sophie Natalia but I stopped being called Sophie when I was 2 - my mum pretty much just decided she didn't like the name! (My then 3-year-old brother chose the name, after all!). I much prefer my middle name anyway and plan to change it officially to be my first name soon.
I don't go by my middle name, but my husband did. This wasn't a choice he made later in life, though, it was choice made by his parents at his birth in order to avoid confusion with his father, after whom he was named.
I know a couple who named their son Steven Alexander and call him Alex. His first name is Steven because that's his father's name. I don't see the purpose of using the father's name as a first name if you're going to give him a different middle name and he won't be a Junior. I can see giving the father's name as a middle name. So in this case, I would have named him Alexander Steven.
