Rose is nice/fine as a given name. I prefer it as a given name, but do also like it as a nickname (preferably for Rosemary, Rosalie, or Rosetta).

I would never describe Rose as prissy. It's strong, gorgeous, and one of my favorite names.

I prefer Rose on its own, in all its lush, undiluted beauty, but whether or not it's better as a nickname is purely a matter of choice. It's great either way.
