I'd like to know the meaning/origin of the Russian male name Mily, as in composer Mily Alekseyevich Balakirev. I have also seen it spelled Milij.

Well, the word for sweet / darling is 'miliy' pronounced "MEE-lee." I know the feminine name Mila comes from that.

But that's just a guess. (I studied Russian many years ago.)
