A lot has happened in the last five years – many these events have been brought on by World War II.
Barbara Washington’s fiancée, Jesse De Veer, was killed at Pearl Harbor in December 1941. This caused Barbara to enlist in the Army Auxiliary Corps. She was stationed in London during the war, and there she met a Scottish Captain in the British Army named Hugh Breckenridge. He survived the war and they married in August 1945. They moved to Edinburgh shortly after the wedding. Hugh is a school teacher and Barbara is a homemaker. Charlie and Mabel are somewhat sad that Barbara is living far away from them, but they are happy for her.
Dorothy went off to college, where she met a young man named Martin Cunningham. He had been in a car accident as a young teen and could not serve in the army. They started dating and Dorothy soon became pregnant. Martin and Dorothy married in early 1944 and welcomed their baby daughter, Victoria Cunningham, in September 1944. She goes by Vicki. Charlie and Mabel love their little granddaughter, but are still somewhat upset about the fact that Dorothy married and became a parent at such a young age.
Edward has divorced his second wife, Anne Elisabeth in 1943. She moved in with her sister in Oregon and Edward doesn’t have anything to do with Ruby and Grace anymore. Edward still raises Simon by himself. He doesn’t have any immediate plans to remarry.
Oscar fought in the Navy during the war and died on D-Day in June 1944. He was 40 years old. Rose is now alone with four children, who are all under the age of fifteen. Rose has moved the family to Boston to be closer to Charlie and Mabel Washington and Dolly and Edith Washington. The children and Rose are just barely coping with the loss but it helps to have family around to support them.
Martha and her husband are just going about their lives in New York. Nothing much has happened; Aster is now seven years old and in school. She is the only child in the household, which still counts Martha, Everett, Emma and Lawrence.
Ada’s husband died in a plane crash in early 1945. She is now alone with three children. She inherited a lot of money after Harvey died, so she is set for life. She is now 40 years old and finding it hard to cope with getting older.
Sunny married a young soldier named Daniel Haynes. They met before he was shipped off to war and she promised she would marry him when he returned. They wrote to each other for four years and married in early October 1945, when Daniel finally returned to the US.
Nora and Jack have also become grandparents. Their oldest son Patrick got his girlfriend, Mary Blumenthal, pregnant and she gave birth to a boy in December 1945. Mary and Patrick name him Jonathan Cameron and they call him Jonny. Jack and Nora want Patrick to do the right thing and marry Mary, which Patrick has promised to do.
Thomas also has a girlfriend, Sarah Caulfield, however; he is not intending on getting her pregnant nor marrying her.
