James is the second son of Xavier III, king of Vanitano, by his third wife Lady Wilhelmina Delham. His older half-brother Olivier, seven years his senior, was expected to become ruler someday, and so was sent away at a young age to become well-versed in kingly duties. James (who was known as Antony until the age of 17) remained with his family, brought up with his four sisters under the watchful eyes of court tutors and governesses.
Xavier died when Antony was sixteen, making Olivier king of Vanitano. He adopted the name Xavier IV upon taking the throne and married Princess Rowena of Umbreca, thereby uniting the two countries. Yet only a few months into his rule, Olivier and Rowena were afflicted with a mysterious illness that unfortunately claimed both of their lives. Thus at seventeen, Antony became king of Vanitano and assumed the name of James VI (his grandfather had been James V). Recognizing the dangerous rift that had formed between Vanitano and Umbreca because of Rowena's death, his first act as monarch was to marry Rowena's younger sister, Violetta.
James is undoubtedly very powerful, as he is also set to become outright king of Umbreca once Horatio IX, Violetta's father, passes away. Yet he is also very just, and his rule so far has been characterized by fairness, peace, and prosperity.
