I love Maya. It's been growing on my lately. I definitely don't think it's too popular, but it isn't dated either. I'm not sure where it's headed, but I don't think it's going to move drastically in either direction any time soon.
I went to school with a Maya. She'd be 22 now. I've also met a few little girls in recent years named Maya.
Maya is the best spelling. And I agree about the meaning.

I think both Maya Egypt and Maya Alexandria are a bit much. They sound too ancient civilization-ish (probably because Maya sounds like Mayan).
I pronounce it MY-yah.
