WDYT of Atlas for a boy? FN or MN?
quick note:
I'm not referring to the titan though. I'm referring to an atlas of the world/book atlas I love world maps, and traveling, etc.
There are two Atlases (the Titian/god Atlas) and a King Atlas.
It's interesting:
"King Atlas, a mythical King of Mauretania, was, according to legend, a wise philosopher, mathematician and astronomer who supposedly made the first celestial globe. It was this Atlas that Mercator was referring to when he first used the name 'Atlas', and he included a depiction of the King on the title-page.lick."

Honestly, it's a bit weird to be named like a geography book IMHO.
And as for your constant worry about gods and goddesses' names, I srt of understand your religious concern to start with, but I seriously doubt that people naming their children Athena or Freya actually do so because they believe in the classic or Norse religions from which these names originally come from. It might a bit different in the case of a religion that still practiced nowadays (eg Indian deities) but not for ancient ones.

I actually taught a little girl named Atlas believe it or not- As soon as you actually meet someone with a name it doesn't seem so far from the realm of possibility anymore- I would definitely prefer it on a boy though. It's not my favourite but I know from experience that a child with some spunk can definitely pull it off.

cool I like Atlas on a girl as well :) I can't decide what gender I like it on more. I'd probably stick with boy but it's cute on girl as well.

I really rather like Atlas, I think it's because of the Titan and also because I like maps too. I think it would be lovely to hear it as a FN, but I don't think it would be well received by the general population. I think they wouldn't understand its appeal. I think Atticus would probably be better recieved. I also like Atticus but not as much as Atlas. Atlas reminds me of books and world globes and nice academic things. Yes. I like it.

Atlas is a bit of a GP for me, probably due to my love (and degree in) Geography. I do like it, but I'd never use it. It seems a bit heavy to stick a kid with as a first name, but not so bad as a middle name.

ummmm... no, don't do that... that would be cruel... Leave it as simply a GP and any children you have will be grateful... Can maybe use it as a nn when he's a kid and see if it sticks or if he tosses it.

I know that Atlas was a name in the ancient world, but for me it's a type of book. The fact that you want to name a kid after a book of maps is odd. Would you name your son Dictionary? Or Thesaurus?
If I try and forget what an atlas is and focus strictly on the name itself...I still say I'm not wild about it. It reminds me too much of Atticus, a name I despise. Does Atlas have any nns that might make the name palatable to me? All I can think of is Att, or maybe Attie.
