I think Maya is cute, but a little plain. I'd only use it as a nn for something.
I prefer the spelling Maya. I would probably end up pronouncing Maja MAY-ah, but I prn. the others MY-ah.
I like Maia and Kaia. I'm not sure which I prefer.
A girl I know uses Maya as a nn for Maria - or at least I think so. Now that I'm thinking about it, I can't remember if it's Maya or Mia... Either way, not sure of the spelling, and I guess she's about 14-16.
Kaia sounds kind of trendy, but it could definitely be toned down with a classic mn, as long as the masses don't get ahold of it before then (as far as I know, it isn't popular yet - I may be wrong). I highly doubt Maia would sound dated - it's too simple and it sounds rather timeless to me. Gaia reminds me of a teacher I dislike - Gaetha (not sure of the spelling), so I myself would never use it. Gay jokes would probably result, as well.
Kaia will probably rise in popularity. I can definitely see that, but I don't know what spelling. Probably Kya, since it's the most basic. I don't think Gaia will be rising any, and since I'm not sure where Maya is on the popularity charts right now, I have no idea which way it will go.
