It just looks and sounds more elegant. I pronounce it the same as you and I agree, the A does stick out.
I also really dislike the name Emma. It was really popular in my area in the 80s and I had 2 in my class of around 25 alone. I know it's really popular just now, but it still feels so dated to me because of this.
