[Opinions] Popularity
How far down the popularity charts is safe?
Do you think if a name is under the top 100 rankings that it is safe to use?
Or should you go further down?

I would only use a name if it is 500 or higher. Unless, if I loved the name to death, 250 and higher is as far as I would go. I would want my son or daughter to have a beautiful/handsome name without being over excessivly common. I wouldn't want him/her to know really more than 3 or 4 kids with that name. Three kids is too much for me; it tells me that the name is too popular and there are likely more people out there to meet with the name.

I don't think it matters. My name was #16 the year I was born, but there was only one other girl in the class with that name. It was no big deal.If you love a name, don't worry about the popularity. You can't gauge someones' personality by their name, anyway. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: there are boring people with unique names, and unique people with boring names. It's all a toss-up.

I would also look at the popularity of the name in your area. Do you know many people with the name or have you heard of kids in your area with the name. I think I would pick a name in the top 100 if I knew there weren't many people with that name around where I live. For instance, Olivia is super popular on the charts, but I don't know anyone with that name. So I might consider it. It's a pretty name.

I personally don't care. I mean, if you really love the name, why should it matter? I mean, my name was about 16 the year I was born, but I so rarely meet any other Victorias. I'm the only Victoria in my High School (we have a Victoriya, who's 2 years older and known as Vicky) and my middle school has a Vicky and a Victoria (neither was there when I was). In general, if you love a name, go for it! Don't let popularity hold you back.

"How far down the popularity charts is safe?"I prefer names out of the charts altogether, but it depends on the person."Do you think if a name is under the top 100 rankings that it is safe to use? Or should you go further down?"I think the top ten or twenty should be out of bounds. It's up to you, how you feel about the popularity of the name.

What do you mean by safe? Like that the chances of the kid meeting someone else their age with their name is low? I'd say for that I'd go out of the top 100, but there are a surprising amount of names in the 1980's top 100 that I've never met.

It depends on the name. Leslie just made its way out of the top 100 and I don't think it will come back anytime soon as it feels a bit tired and needs a break. Most people are also sick of it so I would say it is pretty safe to use Leslie as it will continue to fall and will probably be out of the top 300 in 5 years or so. It is dated and not stylish anymore, the same goes for names like Ashley, Lindsey, Brittany, Chelsea and Danielle. But there are also several names that are out of the top 100 but feel fresh and new, such as Charlotte and Ruby. I wouldn't use those as they will probably enter the top 100 in a year or two. Generally I wouldn't use any name that rose quickly on the popularity chart in the last couple of years. That also goes for Evangeline even though it hasn't even entered the top 500, it just rose way too quickly. But I would use Daisy which is number 140 or so but it isn't rising anymore and never rose too quickly.
