[Opinions] Russell
Replies
Just for something funny, this is a piccie of my friend Russell:
He's pretty much the funniest guy I know, and I have never thought of Jack Russells until you mentioned it now.
Usually we call him Russell, although occasionally Rusty and Russ the Muss (Although I wouldn't recommend that second one, because that was because we studied Once Were Warriors in english, and Jake the Muss is not a good name sake)
Anyways, because of him, I like this name quite a bit.
Edited for spelling.

Russell is fine, as long as it isn't paired with Jack.
I think only people who are especially strong dog fanciers would think of Jack Russell terriers as their first association to this name.
The previous quote about Russell sounding "terribly posh" is humorous to me personally because Russell was the name of my late favorite uncle. He was anything but "posh", but was a great blue-collar guy who loved horses and Western wear. He was a good old country boy at heart who loved kids and animals. When he died at age 90, his family had his casket moved from the church to the cemetery in a horse drawn wagon. :)

Russell is such a handsome name! I didn't even think of the terriers.

Reminds me...
...of this fellow magician named Russel I haven't met for a long time. Not the vaguest idea of Jack Russel Terriers, though. I kind of like the name, but not one I'd name my son with.

I love the name Russell and think it carries a different vibe than most surnames, probably because it has been established as a first name for so long. I guess I mostly think of it fondly because its my Great-Uncle's name and he's a pretty great guy. I didn't even think of Jack Russell terriers. I thought Davy Crockett's legendary sidekick George E. Russell who I always thought was named Georgie Russell as a double name when I was little.
I used to hate it but it's grown on me recently although I think it's a bit dated, maybe because I know a few in their 20s. It was my great-grandfather's name as well. We also knew a family who had three red-haired children and named their baby son Russell because it means red but of course, he had brown hair! Russ is ok as a nickname but I prefer Ross.
I don't think of it as being a surname and the connection with dogs had never occurred to me!

I remember reading a childrens book once and there was a kid called Russell, and the protaganist thought it was "terribly posh". And then you have, shall we say eccentric, Russell Brandt and the rustling of paper. However I do admit it is handsome and on the right person, like all names, no one will think of those associations, just of the person.
As for Jack Russells, no one ever says anything like that for Jack!

You're probably right about Jack..
but even so, I wouldn't let any of those associations stop you. It is a handsome name.
