[Opinions] Russell
I've had this name in my mind for a few days now. I generally dislike surnamey names but I find this one handsome. Or is it too reminiscent of Jack Russell terriers?

Just for something funny, this is a piccie of my friend Russell:
He's pretty much the funniest guy I know, and I have never thought of Jack Russells until you mentioned it now.Usually we call him Russell, although occasionally Rusty and Russ the Muss (Although I wouldn't recommend that second one, because that was because we studied Once Were Warriors in english, and Jake the Muss is not a good name sake)Anyways, because of him, I like this name quite a bit.Edited for spelling.

I really like Russell, NN Russ. I find it very handsome, rugged and smart. But I hate when people use the NN Rusty. Too cutesy.

Russell is fine, as long as it isn't paired with Jack.

I know a Thomas Russell who goes by Russ, and my former band director was Russell "Rusty." It's handsome.Dogs didn't occur to me 'til you brought it up. Although I do like it spelled Rustle for an imaginary group of puppies, with siblings Nestle and Tumble.

I think only people who are especially strong dog fanciers would think of Jack Russell terriers as their first association to this name. The previous quote about Russell sounding "terribly posh" is humorous to me personally because Russell was the name of my late favorite uncle. He was anything but "posh", but was a great blue-collar guy who loved horses and Western wear. He was a good old country boy at heart who loved kids and animals. When he died at age 90, his family had his casket moved from the church to the cemetery in a horse drawn wagon. :)

Russell is such a handsome name! I didn't even think of the terriers.

Absolutely not :) Use Russell! Just heaven forbid calling him Rusty! I think Russ is nice, though.

Russell Crowe, comes to mind immediately. Also, i think of anger and phone throwing. Maybe Naomi Campbell and Russell Crowe, should've be brother and sister?

I never even thought of Jack Russell terriers, when thinking about the name Russell. I would say its ok as long as you dont name him Jack Russell. I know two guys named Russell, one goes by Rusty, and one goes by Ross. Ross is my age and Rusty is my friend's dad.

I think it's very nice. I didn't think of Jack Russells even though I have previously owned one. So I think you're okay on that front.I thought of Russell Crowe. Not a bad association, in my opinion :o)

Reminds me......of this fellow magician named Russel I haven't met for a long time. Not the vaguest idea of Jack Russel Terriers, though. I kind of like the name, but not one I'd name my son with.

I like this name. It's classic and sounds nice on different types of people. I wouldn't ever think of Jack Russell terriers.

I love the name Russell and think it carries a different vibe than most surnames, probably because it has been established as a first name for so long. I guess I mostly think of it fondly because its my Great-Uncle's name and he's a pretty great guy. I didn't even think of Jack Russell terriers. I thought Davy Crockett's legendary sidekick George E. Russell who I always thought was named Georgie Russell as a double name when I was little.

I used to hate it but it's grown on me recently although I think it's a bit dated, maybe because I know a few in their 20s. It was my great-grandfather's name as well. We also knew a family who had three red-haired children and named their baby son Russell because it means red but of course, he had brown hair! Russ is ok as a nickname but I prefer Ross.I don't think of it as being a surname and the connection with dogs had never occurred to me!

I remember reading a childrens book once and there was a kid called Russell, and the protaganist thought it was "terribly posh". And then you have, shall we say eccentric, Russell Brandt and the rustling of paper. However I do admit it is handsome and on the right person, like all names, no one will think of those associations, just of the person. As for Jack Russells, no one ever says anything like that for Jack!

Well, I suppose that's because Jack's more common and so has lots of other associations. For some reason I associated Russell also with some whisky brand, but that apparently was in my imagination.
I had forgotten about Russell Brandt since I don't live in England anymore.

You're probably right about Jack..but even so, I wouldn't let any of those associations stop you. It is a handsome name.
