I always thought this name was lovely. I just love the sound of it, from the sound alone it's probably the prettiest name in the world. I also think it looks pretty written down.
There are however two problems. One is that it means "sorrows" in Spanish which isn't really that bad because Dolores and Lola are used in Spanish speaking countries as well and nobody cares. But it kind of bothers me anyway. Then the biggest problem is of course the association with Vladimir Nabokov's novel. Don't get me wrong. I love that novel, it is probably one of the best books that has ever been written even though the story is disturbing. Only people who never read it could say it was trashy. The problem is that Lolita is a slang term for a sexually active teen.
I wonder if you think I could use it anyway. I wonder if people who will meet a Lolita in real life could get that association out of their minds.
The other possibility is using it as a nickname for Dolores. What do you think about that ? The character in the book was actually Dolores and called Dolly. Only Humbert Humbert called her Lolita.
Then there's the possibility of using Lola. What do you think of Lola nn Lolita ? The problem is that I can see Lola getting trendy. Do you know any ? Do you prefer Lola or Lolita or Dolores ? Dolly ?

I know a Dolores. She's in her fifties, so it's not a name I associate with a young girl. It's not a bad name, though; maybe a little somber, but not THAT bad. I'd say it's usable.

I too love the novel, but I strongly believe that it has made the name Lolita one that is very unwise to use. The illicit-sexual connotation is just too strong. Even people who have never read the book, and don't read books in general, are aware of it. "Lolita" has become a term for a sexually active, sexually provocative underage girl, otherwise known as "jail-bait." I would strongly advise against ever using this name. It may be a shame that the book ruined it, but that's the way it is.
Edited to add: I made a poll here once, listing different girls' names and asking which ones had too strong a sexual connotation for a little girl. Lolita got the most votes by a landslide.

I like Lolita...it's cute. I do have associations (somewhat) with that kind of slang term for a tart/sexual girl. But not that strongly...
actually I do know a young girl named Lolita. She's in 6th or 7th grade now and very cute. She goes mostly by "Lita". Her sister's name is LaTasha and she goes by Tasha.
I think Lola is cute, but a little bit trendy (ever since Lindsay Lohan's movie "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" and also Denise Richards named her daughter Lola).

I hope Dolores comes back! :D I think she's lovely and Lola is traditionally the nickname for Dolores, I'd buy it. (It's my nickname because it was the closest my brother got to my actual name as a kid and While it's not my favorite, it beats Lori hands down)!
Dolly, OTOH, makes me think of sheep.

I know a Lolita
She is 40 and she doesn't like her name. She gets tired of all the references. She goes by Lita most of the time. It is pretty though and such a shame it's been "tarnished"

I don't think Lolita can exist as a name in its own right, not because of V. Nabokov's novel but because of how Lolita has become a common word to indicate a precociously sexual young girl. Actually, it's a bit awkward even as a nickname.
Dolores is ok, though I am a bit bothered by the meaning too. Lola is a kind of GP. It's a bit nicknamey on its own. What about Dolores nn Lola. I really don't like Dolly.
