I prefer Kate too. I also like Kat. Do you prefer to use a formal long name or put a nickname name, such as Kate or Rosie on the birth certificate?
Me, I prefer a formal long name most of the time, but I think Kate can hold up without the long form. Many people might assume Kate is short for Katherine though, and for that reason alone I would use Katherine for legal purposes.
