They both come from Ariadne, so they are variants of the same name.

By the way, Ariadne is one of my favorites. I'm absolutely in love with it.

I know a girl with that name and she pronounces it "mah-LEE-uh". It's the Hawaiian form of Maria (or Mary as this site says) since they don't have an "r" in their alphabet.

It means "bitter", as in "bitterly loved".
