Mattis? It's a short form of Matthias used as a full name in Sweden. But Matthias is pronounced Ma-TEE-as over here. Still I think it's a really cute name or nick name and I think you can use it even if you pronounce it like Ma-THIE-as.

I like Matti myself. But I think it's good that you have the option of Matt too. Even if you think it's too common, it can be good to have a regular back-up name. It's probably the best option for when he's a teenager too.

You could also use Matas or Mats.

I know a small Matthias, no nickname, and it's not too much to bear in the slightest. I've also grown very fond of Matt as of late and recommend that you read Neil Gaiman's Sandman comics and see if you start to like it more, too. ;)
