[Opinions] WDYTO Hamish?
I'm on the fence about it so I thought I'd see what others thought

I LOVE it!!
There are definite drawbacks, but I love the sound of it. It seems like people have trouble saying it, but oh well. I'm in a Scottish phase of sorts, and I love love love this name.

I like it, but I'm Canadian of scottish descent. It's not that unusual here, and particularly common in Nova Scotia- especially Cape Breton.
Linklater.
I love it, it's a great name. I do think it's starting to gain popularity here in Australia though, thanks to comedians/radio hosts/occasional tv guys, Hamish and Andy.
Kind of old and dusty.
It simply reminds me of German "hämisch" which means "sardonic".
There is an older guy where I am studying with this new. Actually there is an Angus too and I am not in Scotland LOL.
But I think it works (at least for older guys). Good solid name. I don't get the ham comments - it is pronounced Hay-Mish!

I like it. I get why people are saying the ham thing of course, but I don't think it would be so ridiculous that the kid would get scarred for life. I mean, it only looks like ham. It's not pronounced like ham. And who doesn't like ham anyway? :)

I have a cousin with this name and it is also the name of my ex's little boy, so I have very positive associations with it. Plus I'm a fan of Scottish names anyway. I have never thought about the ham thing because it isn't pronounced like that, same as my name is Sophie and I've never thought about how it contains the word sop.
It's a great name.

I don't mind it, partly because it is the name of a very cute Australian comedian :D
It's very common here. Not something I'd use, but it's fine.

it's pronounced HAY-mish not HAM-ish
so i don't see where the ham nickname comes in as others have commented. My Dad wanted me to be Hamish, had I been a boy, but my mum would have vetoed it, and I'm kind of glad since it would have got me teased at school. I don't think it's ever been considered a fashionable name here. I've seen at least one in bas recently though. I think the trend for very Scottish names might mean I see more.

Where do you live? I wouldn't have thought it was a strange enough name to get you teased at school.

I live in Glasgow, Scotland, i.e. not in the Western Isles or very North where I guess you might see more Hamishes. Here I've never encountered one. It's not just that it would be strange, I had a teddy bear called Hamish, I was aware of the name, but it's linked a bit with the stereotypical image of a highlander.
As I said though very Scottish names like Archie, Lachlan, Finlay, Fraser, Murdo, even Jock, is the new trend among a certain group in society.

I don't care for how it sounds or looks. I've just never been able to like this name.
I don't like it at all. It just doesn't sound very nice, and it doesn't look like a real name. To each their own, though. I'm pretty sure there is someone on here who named their son Hamish. But I just don't like the look or sound of it.
I like it, I always have, I think it's cute on a baby and handsome on a man. I also don't mind the nn Ham... because I like ham, it's yummy. So no bad connotations for me.
I hate it, sorry. It has such an ugly sound to me--like a mix of squish, ham, and maim.
I like it.
A heap of people are going to mention Ham
but i disagree with them.
I like it. My cousin Joshua was going to be Hamish, but my aunt and uncle changed their minds.
