What do you think a person would be like if this was their name? Like what characteristics, what their personality would be, etc.

Well, again my impression of this name is deeply affected by the movie "Muriel's Wedding", in an effort to be more attractive and trendy Muriel changes her name to Mariel.
So to me Mariel is actually quite a dorky name, and I invision someone slightly socially inept, trying very hard to impress the crowd, and not physically attractive at all.

I prefer Muriel.
I see a nice girl/woman who is quiet and shy but well liked be her peers. Dark hair and light/pale skin.

Mariel is a beautiful name. I imagine someone quite charming and likable, but also introverted--maybe a bookworm. No particular physical features spring to mind.
