[Opinions] Baden
A friend I recently got in touch with through facebook has had a baby boy and named him Baden (pronounced Bay-den).
I think (though I am not sure) that they got the name Baden from a man named Baden Powell (who I think was a conservationist?).
I have to say, everytime I see it written I think of bad'un (as in "Oh, he's a bad one!").
What do you think? I don't like it.

I really don't like it, plus this little boy will always have to correct people that his name is Baden and not Braden.
I don't like it. It looks like a typo of Braden.

It definitely makes me think of Robert Baden-Powell who is very famous in Britain for founding the Scouting movement 101 years ago. He was famous before that as a military hero in South Africa. Baden is pronounced Bayden. I also know of the German town Baden-Baden (Bahden) because that's where the England team were based during last year's World Cup.
It's not really my thing as I'm not a fan of surnames generally and it is too similar to Brayden which is popular these days. It's nice that she's used something different though.

As a German
the first thing I thought of was the word "baden" which means "to bathe". The second thing would be the federal state of Baden-Württemberg (a part of Germany). At least they're better associations then bad one, but I don't like the name either.

It's the same in Dutch
"to bathe" was my first thought too, after that it's also the plural of "bath" or "pool" and the past tense of (we) "pray". So uhm, 'no' as a name for Baden as far as I'm concerned.

I thought of Baden Baden. It's a city in Germany famous for mineral baths? Very very pretty, but full of old people. But that's pronounced BAH-den. I don't think I'd ever want to name a kid that.
Bay-den sounds trendy, and the spelling doesn't lend itself to the pronunciation. I don't really enjoy the sound either. So yeah, basically, I don't like it.

Robert Baden Powell founded the Boy Scouts, actually, IIRC.
I don't like it. It reminds me of Baden-Baden, the town in Germany, so I want to pronounce it Boddin. :-/

I knew I should have googled him! ;P
I thought he was a conservationist because there is a nature reserve near Dwellingup named after him.. Well I did put a question mark! I wasn't sure!

Lol, it's okay! I just thought you might like a concrete answer--which wasn't very concrete at all, considering that that was off the top of my head. ^^;; But Wiki seems to suggest that yes, he was at the head of the scouting movement way back when...and that the Powell part of his last name sounded like "poll," interestingly enough. I've never heard it said, so I've just got to take their word for it.
