Morana Zoe Yarrow
(Morana means death, Zoe means life, and the flower yarrow symbolizes healing)
One could consider Morana Zoe Yarrow lived a pretty normal life - aside from the fact that she was an orfan and lived from foster family to foster family, never really feeling like she belonged in any of them. She was 16 when she arrived at her last foster home. The couple who took her in had many foster children, but only one daughter of their own - Blair, who was also 16. It took a while for Morana to completely trust Blair, but they became good friends - more, they became sisters.
One day, they were hanging out together in a carnival when a strange looking gypsy woman passed. She didn't have a booth, nor did she seem to work in the carnival at all. She look intensely at Morana when they passed, but they kept on walking. Later that evening, Blair had gone to get them something to eat when the gypsy approched Morana.
"Do you know who you are?", she asked.
"Yeah!", she exclaimed, surprised. "What are you talking about?"
"You're one of them... the one with the power of life and death..." the woman stated.
"Sure. I really don't have any money on me, so..." She just frowned and went to look for Blair, leaving the woman alone.
She must've looked freaked out when she found her friend, because Blair asked, "Is there something wrong?"
"Nah, just some weirdo."
She forgot all about the encounter and their lives went on. About a year later, tragedy struck the family: Blair and two of her foster siblings got sick, and no doctors seemed to be able to identify their illness. The other two died after a few days in the hospital, and if the infection wasn't identified soon the same would happen to Blair. Morana was terrified - just when she had found a friend, her only friend, she was in mortal danger. Eventually, Blair slipped into a coma, just like the other two children had before they died. Morana was crying , holding Blair's hand, when she suddenly woke up. The doctors were shocked: Blair was fully recovered. No one knew what happened. Blair's parents thought it was a miracle.
Even though she wasn't alone that day, Morana was the only one who saw the light coming out from Blair's and her linked hands.
She started having faint memories of her early childhood - she remembered picking up an injured bird, who in a matter of seconds flew without harm from her hands, and other events of the same kind. That's when she remembered the gypsy's words.
The doctors insisted that Blair stayed in the hospital for a few more days. When she was asleep, Morana decided to go look for her. She knew where the gypsies' camp was in her town. She caught a bus and when she arrived there, she felt less than welcome - everyone looked weirdly at her. She brought herself to ask someone about the woman - she described her - but it was the woman who found her.
As crazy as it sounded, even to her, she told the woman she thought she had healed her sister.
"Yes, I knew you'd come one day or the other... you're the only one I found after all these years."
The gypsy told her about a project that had been assembled many years ago. The purpose was to find gifted children like her - and the gypsy was one of the ones in charge of finding them. At first she didn't know what for, but they assured her it was for the children's own good. Only, the man who ran this project had less noble plans. He wanted to abduct the children and have them be raised by a tight circle of his friends, in order to create a powerful organization.
The parents of many of the children were murdered - among them Morana's parents. When the woman and the other ones who found the children realized what they had done, they came up with a plot to free them. Most of the children were rescued and entered the system with new names, which related to their powers, as the woman explained Morana. That group of people had to hide - the gyspy wasn't really a gypsy, she was just living in the camp for safety.
Morana started to visit the "gypsy" regularly and developing her powers - she trained on plants and animals. She discovered that not only she could heal them, as she could also make them sick. The woman told her it was called biological manipulation. As much as she claimed she didn't want to use the "dark" side of the power, there was always an idea in the back of her mind: kill the man who had murdered her parents. The man who abducted all those children like her.
She discovered that man was a very powerful businessman, whom she wouldn't easily have contact with. She decided to try to infiltrate his company to try and reach him.
In the meanwhile, she thought about how to use her powers. She thought it wouldn't be fair to just go around the hospital healing everyone - there were millions of sick people all over the world, there would be no way she could cure them all. So she started to patrol the streets at night, curing mostly mugging victims, innocent people who had been attacked. She was careful never to show them their face. Whenever she could, she made the criminals sick - not enough to kill them, but enough to let them easily be caught by the police.
She never told anyone about her power, not even Blair - with whom she is still friends.
When she turned 21, she got a job in the man's comany. She worked hard, with her mind always set on revenge. She got to meet him and he even complimented her dedication. Until one day, he decided to make her his private assistant. Now that she was so close to her goal of so many years, she started to have second thoughts. But one day it all changed. She was working late with him when he started trying to make an advance at her. She kept turning him down until he grabbed her - and all the hurt and resentment came pouring out.
"Do your know who I am? I'm one of the children whose lives you've ruined."
That was the last thing he heard before collapsing with a heart attack.
She didn't quit right away - she thought it might have been suspicious. So she started working under the man's son. One day, she was with him at an inauguration when she was told someone was looking for her. She recognized her friend right away, the "gypsy" even though she hadn't spoken to her in a few years. She had heard about everything that had happened to that man, and realized it must have been her. What she never knew was that the son of that man was one of the children they weren't able to save. "He must have adopted him," she stated.
Morana organized a sort of an abduction of her own boss, so that they could talk to him. To their surprise, he was very well aware of his own powers - but he didn't know about his father's project and he was having a hard time believing it. Morana also told him what had happened the night his father had died.
"Why shouldn't I just turn you over to the police right now?" he asked.
"One, because they wouldn't believe you." Morana simply stated. "Two, because once you dig it up, you'll find that we're telling the truth. I consider myself fired for this, but I won't run. Do whatever you want to."
He did discover all about it - and so he contacted Morana once more.
"I can't blame you for what you did," he said, "but I don't have to like you either."
He developed a plan to have them find the other children and tell them the truth about themselves, with the help of the gypsy. Morana accepted, and so now, besides they apparent boss-assistant relationship and Morana's paralel work, they are working together to find the others.
(Ha! Felt like writing. I didn't mention the son's name because he is going to be Morana's SO, in case I also have to name him consideringhis power - the letter N! :D)
