Number: 52If I need to shorten my story, I will.Belle awoke one morning to a faint whining sound. Thinking it was her 3 year old, Mollie, she quietly got out of bed and walked down the hall to Mollie's room. After peeking in to find her quietly slumbering daughter, she walked through the house trying to encounter the source of the noise.
She realized, finally, that the noise was coming from outside the front door. Confused, and with a foreboding feeling, she opened the door to find a shivering, crying, baby boy wrapped only in a thin blanket. Shocked, she fervently looked all around her house and the street hoping to see the caretakers of this baby. With no luck, she looked down at the pitiful boy, who looked to be about 3 months old. She noticed he was laying on a piece of paper. She picked the baby up, and quickly scanned the contents of the note. In her surprise, she dropped the note and stared into space. It couldn't be, she thought. How could this happen? What DID happened? These questions swirled in her head as she picked up the note and went into the kitchen.
She held the baby, Harrison's baby, in her arms as she waited for her husband to wake and come sleepily stumbling into the kitchen to get a cup of coffee. The note had said, short and simple, "This is Colin Haley, son of Harrison James. Please take him. I cannot provide for him any longer." It was signed Cassie King. As Belle's anger was rising, she heard her husband's unmistakable footsteps.
"Explain this," she said as he walked into the room. She got up and placed the baby in his arms and gave him the note. Harrison's eyes were completely round with shock.
"Oh my God," he said dully.
"I'm waiting for your answer, Harrison," a furious Belle growled at her husband.
"It's not what you think, Belle, I promise," he pleaded, "You know, I would never be unfaithful to you."
"Then, why on earth, would someone place a child that is not mine, but apparently yours on our front step?"
"Sit down, please," he said as he sat down at the table himself, cradling his son. "You know that I love you, and I would never cheat on you. Cassie King was an old friend of mine. In high school we would joke that if neither of us got married, we would marry each other. Anyway, when I was out at the bar about a year ago, I ran into her and her husband. She told me that they couldn't have children because her husband was sterile, or something. So, they asked me to be a donor. I know, it's crazy, but they did. I told them no, but they cornered me. She tried to guilt me into it, and her husband nearly got violent with me. So, I agreed. I didn't sleep with her, though, Belle, I would never do that," he added quickly as Belle glared.
The two discussed all that happened, and agreed to keep the boy, if his parents wouldn't take him back. They got the police to find Cassie. She said that her husband cheated on her, and left her a month before Colin was born. She tried to take care of him, but she just couldn't do it alone, and besides that, her depression and loneliness cause her to drink, a lot. She didn't feel she would be a fit mother, and felt it would be too hard for her. She terminated parentage of Colin, and the James' welcomed him into the family. It took Belle awhile to forget her anger at Harrison. She understood the situation, but didn't appreciate that fact that he didn't tell her about this important act of his over a year ago. However, she forgave him, and loves Colin as her own.
