[Opinions] Actual twins names.
I thought it would be interesting if people posted the names of twin they know. You always hear people saying what they would name twins if they had them, (eg: Patsy and Putsy), but in reality, do people actually go that far?I know a few sets of twins so here they are. These are all friends/ aquaintances.Steven and Eric (Age: 18)
Michaela and Shauna (Age: 17)
Sylvia and Rose (Age: 16)
James and Rachel (Under 1 year old)
Megan and Emma (Age: 9)Funny story though: Michaela and Shauna were teling me the other day that their mam wanted to name them Ocean and Sky until somebody said "Imagine calling them for their dinner!". I laughed so much because if you knew Michaela and Shauna you would know that they are no Ocean and Sky!I'll add more if I remember them.

They're all from my year group (anyone else amazed that in a year group of less than 120 students there are six sets of twins?)Alistair and Camille
Joshua and Isaiah
Gemma and Jayde
Jonathan "Jono" and Judith
Matthew and Jacob
William and James "Jim"As you can see, they are all far from interesting, and not at all themey. This is not at all surprising as I actually haven't met anyone with any really unusual names.

Maria-Lynn and Monica (20)
Jeremy and Nathan (20)
Ada and Harriet (11 or so)
Nathan and Noelia (2)I also knew a pair of twins in like third or fourth grade. One of them was Caitlin, I'm pretty sure, but I'm blanking on the sister's name. I want to say Sarah but for some reason I'm thinking it's something more "twinny". I have no idea where my yearbooks from that time period are, either. Ah well.

Twin sets I can think off the top of my head:Jeffrey and Joshua "Jeff and Josh" (21; I could never tell which was which in school)
Diana and Danielle (21)
Cassie and Lydia (14)
Logan and Tavey (both boys, born to an eighteen year old girl last yearish?)I can't think of any others at the moment. But yeah, people name twins stupid stuff. It definitely happens.ArrayETA: Richard and Robert "Ricky and Robby", who are also 21, but who lucked out in the fact that they looked completely different. (One was tall and stocky, while the other one was shorter and looked like a rat. Different natural hair colours, the works.) I also know of twins around 14 with one named Hope, but I can't remember what her sister is. It's something Biblical, not wordy, like Sarah or something.

Just a theory...I don't think any of us would really know very many Patsy/Putsy-esque twins, nor would we know any twins named Tyler and Taylor or Christina and Christopher. I have a theory that we wouldn't care about names as much as we do if we lived in an area with no sophisticated, interesting names and if every baby we knew was called Samantha or Nicholas. I like both of those names very much, but they're boring. We need "name stimulation" to get us interested and thinking about names. If this theory is correct, the majority of us would come from communities that have a few interesting [note: not neccessarily good, but *interesting*] names to spark our interest. Therefore, we probably wouldn't know too many themey twins. Does this make any sense? It's very logical to me, but I can't phrase it correctly when written out. :/

I think that very few people in general, in any area or from any socio-economic class, give twins themey names or names that are too similar. I think that the vast majority realize that it is silly, that if they do so they and their twins will encounter a large amount of eye-rolling throughout their lives, and they know that twins need a sense of their separate identities, which themey and similar names would be an obstacle to.In my example, only Mary Kate and Mary Beth, and Lamar and Lamont, were themey and too similar. I always rolled my eyes at Mary Kate and Mary Beth. Lamar and Lamont are not quite as bad. But in my experience, those kind of twin names are in a small minority.
vote up1
TrueI don't think very many people would use Mary Kate and Mary Beth together. However, look at this list:http://ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/twins.htmlNearly all of the top names for twins are very themey or sound similar. :/
vote up1
I would say that's because people who use less similar names for their twins are less likely to use the same set of names as someone else so even though more people don't follow themes their sets aren't as popular or common.

In high school I knew:Identical twin girls named Lee and Ellen.Boy and girl twins named Theodore nn Ted and Patricia nn Patty. My husband was friends in college with identical twin guys named Joseph nn Joe and Thomas nn Tom.I knew identical twin girls in college named Mary Kate and Mary Beth. I don't know whether or not they were actually Mary Katherine and Mary Elizabeth, or if Kate and Beth were their full middle names.I once knew a woman who had a twin brother, although I never actually met her brother. They were named Janet and Anthony nn Tony.We knew a couple who had fraternal twin boys named Alexander nn Alex and Maxwell nn Max.My ex-boyfriend's cousin has two sets of twin boys. The first set is fraternal and named Lamar and Lamont. The second set is identical and named Aces and Aries. My brother and sister-in-law have fraternal twin boys. They're named John Richard Jr. and Andrew Bryan. And my niece had twin girls this past May 13. I don't know if they're identical or fraternal. Last I heard she had picked out a first name for one of them but not a middle name, and still hadn't decided on any name for the other one, even after they were born. Once I have more information, I plan on posting about them.
