[Opinions] Jonah/ Jonas
What are your opinions on the name Jonah or Jonas? Which do you prefer and why? I am torn, as I prefer the way that Jonas looks but I like the way Jonah sounds, although that changes daily! How does either name sound with siblings Oliver, Clara and Tobias? Is Jonah too similar to Clara, or is Jonas too similar to Tobias? Thank you for all your input!Edited to add: What middle names would you pair with either Jonah or Jonas? I always struggle to think of MNs so any ideas would be most welcome - thanks.

I like both names, but to be honest I much prefer Jonah. I just prefer the sound and look of it and also think it fits in better with Oliver, Clara and Tobias. I don't think Clara and Jonah are too similar at all. I like the following combos:Jonah Raphael, Jonah Eric, Jonah Lawrence, Jonah Gideon, Jonah Luke, Jonah Seth, Jonah Samuel, Jonah Sebastian, Jonah Finley, Jonah Frederick, Jonah Michael, Jonah Matthew, Jonah Maxwell/Max/Maximilian, Jonah Benjamin, Jonah Zeke, Jonah Brendan

Jonah ...I love the way Jonah sounds, plus Jonas is pretty popular over here.

Where abouts do you live, if you don't mind me asking? I've noticed a few little Jonahs around England, i'm wondering if that is where I've got it from, but I don't think I've ever met a Jonas!

Jonah is cute, Jonas is somehow pretty... fancy. Jonah is a bit too smooth, though.

Jonas.Jonas is a man's name to me, Jonah is a little boy.

I like both Jonah and Jonas, but I much prefer Jonas. I agree that Jonas and Tobias are a bit too similar, but Jonah and Clara are fine.

I love the name Jonas. Jonah sounds so young, I just can't imagine it on an older person. However, Jonas seems like it could go well with someone of any age. I agree with you that Jonas looks really nice, though I prefer the sound of Jonas to Jonah.I'd think that either name would go well with Oliver, Clara, and Tobias. My favorite Jonas combo is Jonas William.

I like Jonas William, it works well together, thank you!

I prefer Jonas over Jonah. Jonas looks better and sounds better, Jonah sounds like it's said sort of... lazy? I think Jonas and Tobias don't sound too much alike.

I like Jonah the best. I just don't like the 's' at the end of Jonas (maybe it reminds me of Silas?).Jonah Vincent
Jonah Campbell
Jonah Alexander
Jonah Michael
Jonah Eric

Jonah Vincent is very handsome, thank you! From reading the other posts it seems like Jonah can seem a bit immature, but Jonah Vincent definitely seems manly to me. Thank you for your help!

I'm like you. I should like Jonas better because I tend to like Greek variants over Hebrew ones (ex: Elias over Elijah). Plus, I would have thought that Jonah-in-the-belly-of-the-whale would cause me to shy away from the name. But I recently lost my favorite aunt, Joan, and Jonah is closer in sound. So that's my favorite between the two. As for how it sounds with Oliver, Clara and Tobias, you're going to run into a very minor problem with either Jonah or Jonas, as you already pointed out. So I wouldn't bother trying to use how the name would sound with the siblings. Either Jonah or Jonas match the style of the others beautifully and would work just fine. Jonah Benjamin
Jonah Barnabas
Jonah Bernard
Jonah Bartholomew
Jonah Matthias
Jonah Simon
Jonah Thaddeus
Jonah Max
Jonah Cornelius
Jonah Michael
Jonah Elias ;-)
Jonah Daniel
Jonah Melchior
Jonah Gabriel
Jonah Malachi
Jonah Patrick
Jonah Gavin
Jonah Malcolm
Jonah Calum / CallumGood luck!

Thank you for your suggestions, I like Jonah Gabriel and Jonah Malachi but particularly Jonah Max! I have a bit of an unconscious three letter middle name theme going on with my two other boys names (it just seems that three letter names appeal to me!) and I'd like to carry that on if there is a name I actually like enough to use and I love Max! Thank you!

I love Jonas -- I find it considerably more substantial (and euphonious) than Jonah.

I dislike bothEveryone here seems to love them, and I really dislike them. They both come across as names a whiny child would have. On top of that, I'm starting to get sick of boys names that start with Jo-, which doesn't help. As far as your sibset goes, it goes well and I don't think they're too similar to the other names. I just don't like either of them.

Thats fair enough. I don't like the nn Joe and I would actively discourage it on a child called Jonah or Jonas. I feel like it isn't quite such an inevitable nn as it would be on a child called Joseph, or is that really naive, lol? Any reasons as to why it seems 'whiny' or just a feeling? Thanks for your input.
vote up1
No, it's not inevitable. None of the Jonahs I've known have ever been Joe, and all the Josephs have.

That makes me feel a bit better! Did they go by any other nicknames?

A little historyJonas is the Greek form of Jonah used in the New Testament, so both names have the same history/meaning. Biblically, Jonah was a Jewish prophet who God sent to evangelize the people of Ninevah. The people of Ninevah were despised, and Jonah refused to minister to them, and took a ship headed to another city. There was a storm and Jonah told the crew to throw him into the sea to save themselves. After Jonah is thrown into the sea, the storm subsides and a fish swallows Jonah. Jonah stays in the belly of the fish for three days until the fish vomits him up on the land. Jonah then (still unwillingly) goes to the people of Ninevah and many repent. It is also mentioned that Jonah would rest under a fig tree for the shade, and God sent a worm to kill the fig tree. The fig tree died and Jonah mourned the loss of the tree. God then asks Jonah why he mourned for the loss of a tree but did not care for the loss of people (those in Ninevah). So, Jonah was a prophet, but he is remembered for rebelling against God, reluctance to obey, and being callously self-centered. So this may be where the "whiny" comes from.

Nope, just from people I know. I'm not a fan of Biblical names either, though. They're not really my thing.

I prefer Jonas..I think either would work with the sibsets.
Jonah is ok, it's just a little *too* biblical. Biblical is a *snore* for me usually. It also sounds a little incomplete next to Jonas.
Jonas is a lot more appealing to me for some reason, but I'm not entirely sure why.

JonahI prefer Jonah. It's cleaner sounding and a little less common. Maybe that Weezer song boosted the popularity of Jonas.I don't like Jonas with Tobias, but either Jonah or Jonas sounds fine with Oliver and Clara.

I didn't realise there was a song about Jonas! *Goes off to google that* Do you think Clara and Jonah are too similar at all?
vote up1
No, I think Clara and Jonah are ok.
