I don't like it... I had a science teacher named Mrs. Barlow, so it will always be a surname to me. Plus she was terrible.

Ugh. NMSAA, I dislike it for any gender. Sorry.

Sorry, but what with all the publicity those FLDS people have gotten the last month, Barlow is very strongly tied to them, being a common surname for them.

It doesn't really work for me - but it's similar to Harlow/Marlow etc - which seem to be becoming popular - so can see that it would appeal to others. Some other ideas that you might like (if you're liking the B sound) are Bellisario (boy's name I came across in a book recently - which I'm really liking) and Berillo (I know you like gem stone names - and came across this one just recently as well.)

Coronation Street... [m]I think Ken Barlow...It would have to be male, but it's exclusively a surname for me.

never heard of it?

Me too! Worse, I think of Tracey Barlow before any other Barlows. Not good at all. Sometimes Coro makes me love names (Violet, Francesca, Bethany eg., but mostly it just gives me bad associations with otherwise OK names. :-P

Oh yes,That is true. I started liking Violet because of Coro. Before then it seemed either a) very old-ladyish or b) very literary. But then I was able to see it on a real, live person (well, character).

I think Violet might start to become more popular over here as a result of Corrie. Flower names like Rose, Poppy, Daisy and Lily are already popular and even though I think Violet is old-ladyish, the fact that a young character has it might mean parents start using it more.

Oh, thank goodness someone else knows CoroIt's a shame because it has ruined so many good names for me. e.g. Audrey, Deirdre, Charlie...But back on topic, I would have to agree with everything else you have said.

Yes, and I don't even watch Corrie!

I don't care for the sound of it, but I also think it would prompt a lot of teasing... "the bar is set low"

It's doesn't have an attractive sound at all. I don't care for it for either gender but to me it would be more male than anything else.
