I do love the name and prefer the Leila spelling. It does bother me that Laila and Layla also seem to be 'legit' spellings. In fact, I did an Internet search once on quite a few Arabic sites that listed baby names and even they didn't agree which spelling was most correct for many names. Yes, I think the name would work for a child with any ethnic background.
