The information I have is limited, but for the most part fairly accurate. The surname RANGEL originated from Germany (although it has been noted in France as well). When pronounced by Germans the first letter "R" is almost growled when pronouncing the last name. The last name was noted as early as the year 1100. From there the name was then noted in Spain around 2600 where Maria and Jaun Rangel were taken in by part of Spains royal families. The earliest settlers in North America with this last name were Franz, Jacob and Veronica Rangel in around 1550. They settled in Texas.
My father is originally from San Antonio, Texas and I am from California. For a trip, we both flew to San Antonio where I decided to look in a phone book to see how common my last name was. It turns out there was about 4 pages of Rangels in Texas. It was as commen as Wilson or Smith. It seems that are roots in North America begin in Texas and flow move towards South America, mostly Mexico.
