I prefer Kitty to Cate. Cate is just Kate spelled with a C. It looks more kr8tive, and there's an overabundance of Kates and Katies in my age group that I'm tired of it.
Kitty does not seem strange or stripperish, to me. It also has the bonus of being shortened to Kit, if the child prefers it to Kitty when they get a bit older. It's different, but also a bit retro. I like it a lot.
