[Opinions] Emeric
I've fallen in love with Emeric ("EM-er-ic") lately.
Before I was a full-blown namenerd I was an old film nut. The name Emeric Pressburger would come up every now and then. Born Imre Jozsef Emmerich Pressburger in Hungary, he moved to Germany and France before settling in Britain and changing his name to Emeric. (Film buffs out there will know that he is a writer / directer and producer of British films.)
This name has been rolling around in the back of my head and lately has moved to the front. It seems easy to spell and say. It's got history, but hasn't been overly used to the point of boredom. For parents looking for a "unique" name, Emeric (to me) fits the bill.
What are your thoughts on Emeric? Any mn suggestions? Do you prefer Emmerich or even Amalric? Do you see any teasing potential / problems that I'm missing?
Thanks in advance.

Aymeric
could be your friend was an Aymeric- that's the only version of the name I've come across in real life, on a 20-something French guy from Grasse. It's not in the database, but I think it's legit, as there's an infant Prince Aymeric of Belgium and 730 000 google hits, same number as Emeric.
Aymeric is the version I like best, with Emeric running second- though it looks vaguely medical to me!

Interesting. I suppose the German pronunciation would be closer to an "ay" sound.
Thanks for the info.
Thanks for the info.
I adore Emeric, Emmerich, and Amalric. I think I prefer Amalric best, as I like the nickname Mal (but that may be down to watching too much Firefly and Serenity ;) The syllables just flow really well together - I don't see any problems.
Some ideas:
Emeric Lovel / Amalric Lovel
Emmeric Natan / Amalric Natan
Emeric Idan / Amalric Idan
Emmerich Conrad
Amalric Nelson
Emeric Norman
Amalric Montgomery

I like Emeric alright, probably because it sounds pretty close to one of my top favourites (Emrys). Interestingly enough, one of the only babies born recently to someone I actually know was called Emmerich. Anyway, I was pleased to hear it used and I could not then, nor can I now, think of any reason not to use it. I prefer Emeric over the other options you've listed only because it looks cleanest to the eye. I've been pairing Emrys with Nathaniel or Nathaniel Hugh lately and I think both options also sound nice with Emeric. Some other choices are Alexander, Alasdiar, William or just Hugh.
I've heard it before but never really thought about it. Now that I think about it, I really like it. It's going on my list. :) It has my brother's name in it, too (Eric) so that's a plus.
Some mn suggestions:
Emeric Allan
Emeric Bastien
Emeric Cecil
Emeric Cyrus
Emeric Desmond
Emeric Evan (my brother is Eric Evan so I had to do it)
Emeric Gideon
Emeric Joel
Emeric Jules
Emeric Linus
Emeric Lionel
Emeric Lloyd
Emeric Miles
Emeric Remy
Emeric Skylar
Emeric Spencer
Emeric Sterling
Emeric Waldo

I like Emeric. I'm more into the weight and dimensions of German names so I'd prefer Emmerich, but either way it's quite appealing. I agree with you that it would be great for someone looking for a bit of a "different" name; it has some familiar sounds that people seem to be attracted to but it's something that hasn't been done to death. It's non-threatening as well, I think, without any sharp edges or unflattering elements that would be a huge hurdle for people with less adventurous tastes. But it isn't so mild that it doesn't still have a very handsome sound.
I don't know anything about Emeric Pressburger but what a fun combinations of names and nationalities--a Hungarian with a German surname that suggests a Bratislavan.

You've summed up my feelings on Emeric perfectly. Thanks for the input. :-)
I think Emeric is very handsome, and like you said easy to spell and say, so I prefer it to Emmerich and Amalric.
The only thing I can see wrong with it some might complain it's too feminine what with the popular Em- beginning. But, what with my male cousin being an Emlyn I don't see this as a major problem :)
Combos:
Emeric Peter :)
Emeric Allan / Alan
Emeric Thomas
Emeric Paul
Emeric Hugh
Emeric Julius
Emeric Alexis
Emeric Barnaby (this was one of your top names, right?
Emeric Charles
Emeric George
Emeric Geoffrey
Emeric Louis
Emeric Damian
Any ideas?

Oh, you darling. Emeric Peter is wonderful. :-)
Emeric Hugh and Emeric George are terrific too. I want to like Emeric Barnaby because you're right; Barnaby is a favorite of mine. But I fear it just doesn't mesh well enough for me.
Emlyn is another "film buff-y" name for me. Mr. Williams was one of those actors who as soon as I saw his name I knew I would like the film / his role. I wish Emlyn were useable here in the U.S., but I don't even try to fight that battle.

glad you like it
Thanks. Amalric is nice too. For me it has a historic, Visigoth allure to it that I like. Like Theodoric.
It's too bad Roland Emmerich is a famous person. I love the name Roland and it fits the style of Emeric beautifully. His parents did a nice job. (I know you weren't suggesting it as a combination. My mind just goes there of its own accord.)
