Oh, Alisa is one of my favourite names at the moment! Maybe its snobbish image comes from its "Swedish-ness" - I mean that usually the Swedish-speaking minority picks names like this for their children, and they're considered as the healthy class…
On another hand, I checked Alisa's popularity in year 2006 - it was ranked as 37. first name by Finns and I didn't find it on the "Swedish" list at all. So maybe I speak only about my own experience - I know three Alisas - two of them speak Swedish at home and the third one lives in Amsterdam and comes from Russian family. I don't know, to me, Alisa is one of the most gorgeous names you can give to the child - It's internatioal, not too long, has a few nicknames and works well on both children and adults. But I agree that Aliisa is today a less common and maybe more interesting variant.
But congrats to your sister! I hope you will let us know, what will be Ali(i)sa's (?) full name!
Btw, my cousin has just had a baby girl, too - I wish her name taste was as good as your sister's. She isn't quite sure with the name, but her long-time female favourite has been Yölilja... I mean, seriously.
