I have never heard the bo-REESE version in the USA, only BOR-iss. :)
I think Americans learned the BOR-iss pronunciation years ago from the actor Boris Karloff, and that was later reinforced by the cartoon villain Boris Badenov. :) Not to mention Boris Yeltsin and Boris Becker more recently.
