I'm not even kidding - I was updating my organization's listserv and this is the name of a girl on the list. I don't know her personally so I'm not sure if her name is pronounced "ay-let" or "eye-let" ... maybe it's "ay-ee-let" ... who knows!

I find it just bizarre, though, and had to share it.

Perhaps her mother is a fan of lace?

Well, an eyelet is "a small hole (usually round and finished around the edges) in cloth or leather for the passage of a cord or hook or bar" so that's all I think of when I hear it. Pronounced differently, though, I think it would be fine.

There's a famous sociologist named Ayelet, pronounced ay-YELL-et. I like it, but wouldn't use it because of its similarity to the word eyelet, and also to the name Violet.

I think it means "fawn" in Hebrew and is relatively common in Israel, it's got nothing to do with the English sense of the word. I dislike it because of a negative personal association, but it's not a bad name in itself.

It's one of those Hebrew names which isn't used very much outside Israel.

It's a lovely Hebrew name that means "gazelle." Prn ah-YELL-et. I'm fond of it.

I know an Ayelet pronounced eye-EL-et. I don't think it's bizarre, but I wouldn't use it myself.
