[Facts] Igby?
I watched the movie "Igby Goes Down" last night and fell in love with the name. In the movie Igby got his name from mispronouncing Digby (the name of his teddybear) as a child. That got me curious...Is Igby an actual name? Perhaps a nickname for something? If so, does anyone know its origin and meaning?

According to family search the dictionary of American family names lists it's from a place in Lincolnshire named Bigby, from an Old Danish personal name Bekki + Old Norse bȳ ‘settlement, farmstead'; but family search seems inconsitent and may be matching something close, not an actual entry for Igby. Can anyone confirm?Other references to the dictionary of American family names refer to Higby, but the 1956 version doesn't mention Igby a variant, although it is more plausible. Higby is a toponym but no such place had been identified.

I've never heard or seen it as a name, but I suppose it could be a nickname for Egbert.
