[Opinions] Charity
What do you think of the name Charity for a girl? It's an old favourite of mine, and the post below reminded me of how fond I am of it.

I like it, but I wouldn't use it.
It's nice if you focus on the virtue, but unfortunately it also makes me think of a charity store.
But overall, fine on someone else' child.

But I prefer Grace or Gracie.
An admirable virtue, but not such a good name, imo. Like Roxstar said, in a time and place where "charity case" is insulting, Charity carries some baggage. I'm embarrassed to say that I link the name strongly to prostitution, probably through "Sweet Charity" of dance hall fame and slang like charity moll/girl/dame/insert your vulgarism here.
Plus, I just don't like the sound of it.

I love it, but it seems to be getting popular, at least in my circle of acquaintances. I'm a sucker for Puritan / virtue names, though. :o) Constance is one of my personal faves, as is Merit.
It has a nice meaning, but I don't care for it. I don't like virtue names in general.
i love word names, but i dislike this word name. i have negative reaction to it because i think of idea that someone is a "charity case".
I find Charity overly sweet and puritan and wouldn't use it. Though it's probably a little unfair, I kinda group it with Chastity in the "wishful thinking" virtue names category. That said, xPrincess27x's Charity Julie is really darling, and Mary Charity [one of my ancestors] has a retro Catholic vibe that could be appealing.

It's a bit more interesting than tFaith and Hope, and it's for sure way more interesting than the tired Grace, but I just don't like it. I know charity is a virtue, but a lot of people don't want charity, you know? :) It doesn't have an entirely positive vibe to it for a lot of people.

Some people also don't understand the concept beyond the basic "Here's my old stuff, enjoy." The first definition from m-w.com has nothing to do with the needy--in fact, it's this:
benevolent goodwill toward or love of humanity
Only a misanthropist wouldn't want that. :)

Eh.
I'm normally a fan of virtue names, but Charity does nothing for me. I don't really care for the concept, I much prefer the concept of Mercy. It's okay, though.
