(If you don’t mind I’m going to start writing from Annie’s perspective- also, I know the story is long but I kinda needed to explain the two 15 yr olds getting their girlfriends pregnant in more depth :)
Well, these past years have been pretty eventful. Zachary is such a sweet little boy, Arthur and I are so lucky to have him as our grandchild. Three years ago, Marshall informed us that Amy was pregnant again, and we would have another grandson! I was extremely pleased to have been involved in the naming process for this baby- I requested Noah (my father’s name- he passed away before Marshall was born) be used as a middle name, but Marshall and Amy loved it so much they decided to use Noah as the baby’s first name. Needless to say, I was thrilled.
Devon and Emmet both transitioned very well into high school last year, and really made names for themselves there even as freshmen. Devon is so outgoing and has made so many friends- he’s really been getting into a lot of theatre lately. Emmet’s love remains basketball to this day. While he has a lot of good friends, Emmet is very shy so I think it’s a great outlet for him.
So much for the good news. At the end of last year, Devon started dating a girl named Sydney who was in My Fair Lady, the spring musical, with him. She’s very nice, but a bit intense. One day around the beginning of winter, they confronted us and told us that Sydney was pregnant. We were in shock. As furious as I was, I knew getting angry wouldn’t help the situation- if anything it would make them less likely to confide in and listen to us. Arthur and I offered to help financially, if Devon got a job and took a serious amount of responsibility. To our surprise, he stepped right up to the plate. He got a job at a local children’s theatre. Sydney was doing fine, until the ultrasound revealed she was having quads!! She was pregnant with a singleton, and three identical triplets. She and Devon were stunned. They had no idea how to handle the situation. When Sydney was 10 weeks pregnant, the triplets died. It was tragic, but perhaps in everyone’s (including the babies’) best interest. Chloe Olivia was successfully delivered in July of the following year.
To make matters more complicated, at the time this was starting, Emmet was getting pretty serious with his girlfriend, Anna. They had met over the summer break at an intensive sports camp. Emmet came to Arthur and me and showed us a small tattoo he had gotten on his back- a heart shaped design with ‘Anna Morgan’ running through it. We were furious- especially because he had had his older cousin Mitch pose as his guardian so he could get the tattoo! We were considering making him surgically remove it, but we knew he usually had better judgment than this, and was obviously in love. Just before we found out Sydney was pregnant, Emmet had come to us discussing birth control- he and Anna were considering sex now that they had been dating for quite some time. He seemed very embarrassed about it, so we didn’t press the issue especially because he had come to us, which we deeply appreciated. But when Sydney was 6 months pregnant, Emmet and Anna came to us again and confessed that she too was pregnant- 3 months along. Apparently we should have spent some more time showing them how to properly use birth control! They had already been to a doctor and she was having triplets! What’s more- Anna’s parents had thrown her out of the house! She was going to go live with her aunt in Virginia (we live in MD) and finish high school there. We were so overwhelmed, but quickly offered to let Anna stay with us until she had the baby, and even let her aunt stay for a while if she really felt it necessary; we really wanted to stay near during the pregnancy. Anna had her triplets in September, and named them Julia, Addie, and Caleb. All four babies are doing just fine. Anna is still staying with us, so she can finish the year at her high school, then she will be moving to stay with her aunt. I plan to visit every weekend with Emmet.
