Paul was sent to Europe right after the US entered World War I. Flo was five months pregnant. On July 20 1917, while Flo was giving birth to her seventh child, a telegram arrived stating that Paul had died about a month before. The older children, Daisy, Rose and Lily, decided to wait until the baby was born to inform their mother and the younger children, who were still asleep. When their aunt Emma came downstairs carrying a laughing baby boy, stating his name as Spencer, the girls went solemnly to their mother and handed her the telegram.
The boy was renamed Isaac Spencer, because Isaac had been Paul's favorite name, and Isaac meant "he laughs".
It took the Patch family a while to recover, but they were doing better and Flo was looking after the children and the farm. Then, in 1918, Lily fell sick from the Spanish Flu. She got very sick and died. The whole family was devastated, but luckily, nobody else in the family got sick.
Daisy, meanwhile, was a pretty 18 year old who was very well liked. She had many admirers, but she fell in love with Barnabas Sinclair, the son of the minister in town. Barney was a very religious man and they were married shortly afterwards. Daisy gave birth to a baby boy, Moses Jefferson.
