I think it would be usable on a boy depending where you are. In the U.S. Jean is a girls name and could be very confusing on boy. I agree the spelling Gene is rather ugly and looks like a nn imo. If you were to use the Jean spelling in the U.S., I would suggest you hyphenate it with another more masculine name. Jean-Patrick maybe. Just to avoid any teasing or confusion. I do much prefer the french pronounciation.
