It is now 1847. The Baker family has been very busy for the past three years. Wil has done well on the farm. He bought a brand new tractor last year and was able to harvest twice as much this year as in years past. This fortune has allowed Wil to put away some money for the future. Little did he know that it would have to be used sooner rather than later. Mary has been happily raising the children, tending the garden, and entertaining the neighbors. Rosie, who is five, is very energetic and enjoys playing with the cats and helping Mary in the kitchen. Isaiah, 3, is also a little handful. He is always wandering around outside and getting lost. Eventually, he ends up at the house of one of the neighbors, but he worries Wil and Mary greatly.
Shortly after Rosie's fourth birthday, Mary found that she was expecting again. She was elated! However, the feeling didn't last long. Within a month and a half, she was feeling sick all the time and knew that something was wrong. After a consult with the town's doctor, she was placed on complete bedrest. Thankfully, between she and Wil there were enough siblings and family members to take care of the house and the children. When Mary was seven months pregnant, she went into labor early one morning. Wil hurried to get the doctor again. The doctor tried to stop labor, but all of his efforts did not succeed.
William Jonah, Landon Jude, and Adam Malachi were born that day around 3 in the afternoon. No one expected Mary to have triplets! The birth was strenuous on both Mary and the babies. For two and a half days, the doctor lived at the Baker household, caring for all three of the boys and their mother. The third day, the doctor recommended that Wil take Mary and the triplets to a modern hospital nearby. He obliged and spent the next three months journeying back and forth between the hospital, the farm, and his parents' house (where Rosie and Isaiah were staying). Mary was released from the hospital after three days, nearly at full strength. She returned to being a full-time mom and homemaker. Two weeks later Landon was allowed to come home. In another two weeks his brother Adam followed. Liam, the eldest triplet, did not come home until he was three and a half months old. Staying at the hospital drained Wil's finances to almost nothing, but he does not regret his decision. Now, with Mary and the children at home, Wil is satisfied to work the farm and reap whatever benefits he can from it. Although Liam, Landon, and Adam are still fragile and small, they are beginning to thrive. Rosie loves being a mother to her "liplets" and Isaiah just loves having his Mother back again.
