Roxanne was shocked when she discovered she was pregnant AGAIN. Six kids was already way more than she had planned, and now it was going to be 7! She was terrified to tell Theron whose temper seemed to have gotten worse. His job was stressful and he had been drinking quite a bit, although he had never done anything to hurt Roxanne or the children. When Roxanne finally got up the courage to tell her husband he was indeed irate. In a drunken rage he yelled that they would NOT keep the child unless it was a boy because he couldn't stand having another female in the house. Roxanne was heartbroken. The next day Theron apologized but Roxanne still feared what would happen if the child turned out to be a girl. When the time came to find out Roxanne went to the doctor alone. She couldn't have Theron making a scene. Her heart raced as the ultra-sound tech waved the wand over her growing belly. After several moments of agony the doctor announced that she could not determine the sex of the baby because of its positioning. Roxanne was both relieved and frightened about what would happen on the day of the child's birth. Tension rose all the way up until the birth of the baby. Roxanne and Theron seems worlds apart from each other. All through labor Roxanne prayed for a good outcome. She didn't really care if it was a boy or a girl, she just wanted Theron to love it, and to love her. It was a boy. Theron cheered as if it were his first child. Roxanne smiled when she saw Theron cradle the wee boy in his arms, but she wondered if it was only because the child was a boy. Thus the birth of Clayton Reid was both a joyous and disconcerting experience.
Meanwhile the other Windham children continue in school. They attend the finest schools in town and all excel academically. All except little Ruby. She started kindergarten along with her twin sister but her teacher soon saw that she was lagging behind. She did not seem to be picking up on reading, nor did she seem to be paying attention in class. She was never focused on the board and just seemed to stare off into space. Her parents immediately took her to a doctor-- they (especially Theron) could not imagine that one of their children would fall behind in school! The doctor's diagnosis made everything clear: Ruby was partially blind! Theron and Roxanne had noticed that she was a rather clumsy child and seemed to feel around with her hands a lot for the past year or so, but they never imagined she had difficulty seeing! After fitting her with corrective lenses that improved her vision somewhat and hiring a tutor to help her keep up to pass with her classmates Ruby succeeded and proved to be just as bright as her siblings. Meanwhile, Fernando was recently admitted to his father's (and grandfather's and great-grandfathers', etc . . .) Alma Mater, Princeton, and he is preparing to following in his father's footsteps. Will he decide to go into medicine like the rest of the Windham men? Will he be a wild womanizer like his father was when he was young? Will Theron and Roxanne be able to save their crumbling marriage?
Random event: One of your children is having trouble in school. What is wrong?
