Susana Maria Fernandez expressed interest in keeping her surname but wished everyone in their family, including their future children, to share one surname. Isaac Elmer Beauchamp had no particular fondness for his difficult to spell and pronounce surname and an estrangement from his family made him particularly amendable to the idea of adopting his wife's surname for his own. The couple's children have a mixture of Spanish and English names along with a few others to reflect their mixed heritage.

Susana and Isaac wanted a very large family and were blessed with the means and good health to provide for one. When the twin girls were born, many people assumed they were done having children now that they finally had daughters after seven sons. Yet much to people's surprise and to some people's consternation, Susana and Isaac happily welcomed two more sons to their family and then triplets! After the triplets were born, two identical boys and a daughter, with Susana and Isaac not getting any younger, the Fernandez family was finally complete.
