Claire's explanation would operate, but in the USA Shirelle is primarily from the name of the rock singing group the Shirelles, one of the first "all-girl" groups to become famous. Their name was derived from blending the first name of their lead singer,
Shirley Owens, with an ending derived from the name of the Chantels, a previously popular rock singing group:
