One of my favorite names is Bennett, which is the medieval form of Benedict. I also like Ben as a nickname for Bennett.

1. Pope: yes, but that's not a bad thing imo, it's just a thing. I have no idea who the other guy is.

2. Ben is the logical nickname and it's the one most Benedicts will get whether they like it or not.

I don't like Benedict at all. I much prefer Bennett as an alternative 'Ben' name.

1 - yep I automatically associate it with the Pope, but not Benedict Arnold.
2 - Ben is a great nn. Short, strong, handsome.
3 - Benedict Malcolm, Benedict Lawrence, Benedict Samuel.

I love Benedict, prefer it over Benjamin, love the nn Ben, and don't overtly associate the name with either Arnold or the pope. Combos:

1. I don't know, wow! I am so skewed on this. At first I only associated it with Benedict Arnold, and thought of it as some kind of a title. Then when the pope was poped, I thought "Ew, what a lame name when he could have chosen so many cool ones." Now I adore it, but I do associate it strongly with the pope, because the papal vibes are one of the main reasons I like it so much. So. I don't know.

The very first thing that I think of is Benedict Arnold. I like the name in theory, but that association turns me off to it. I would be afraid that he would be teased relentlessly when they study the Revolutionary War in school.

I really like Benedict! I think it's a lovely name and I don't think the Pope association is a big problem.
I'm not to fond of Ben as a nickname mainly because I don't think a lovely name like Benedict should be shortened. Ben is kind of plain and boring, Benedict is not.

Now that there's a pope named Benedict, a minority of people might assume that's where you got the idea from (especially if you're Catholic). But I think the overwhelming majority would associate it with Benedict Arnold.

I'm not too keen on Ben as a nickname because it's the most common nickname for Benjamin. Since Benedict is awesome due to the fact that it's uncommon and unpopular, I believe that giving it the nickname Ben is destroying the charm that comes with its usage.

Benedict has gone back and forth with Jedidiah for my #1 / #2 favorite name for quite a while now, long before Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger ascended to the papacy. Benedict Arnold has never entered into it for me. However, we do have to admit a high degree of probability that it will be fairly strongly linked to the one, and to a lesser degree the other. That doesn't bother me in the least (I'm Catholic, after all). You have to decide if it bothers you.

I first came to Benedict because I love the nn Ben but do not love Benjamin (I have the same issue loving Nick and disliking Nicholas - and haven't found a similar way around that one yet). But Benedict has continued to grow on me in its own right. These days I still love the nn Ben, but have also come to love the nn Bick (which was Rock Hudson's character's nn in the movie Giant - his real name was Jordan Benedict Jr).

I have a ton of Benedict combos, both as fn and mn. I think it matches up equally well with monosyllabic or polysyllabic names, though polysyllabics sound better as fn's, imo. A sampling (my extreme faves have *):
