[Facts] Pyry
Replies
It is pronounced POO-roo (the R is rolled). The stress in Finnish is always on the first syllable and Y is prounounced like a U. You can hear it on this site: http://www.mikropuhe.com/demo.asp
Type Pyry in the the box and click "Kuuntele Puhe" to hear it pronounced.
[edit to add that bit about the Y]

It's not quite POO-roo. You can use the Mikropuhe speech synthesizer to compare puru and pyry. Puru is pronounced POO-roo and it means sawdust (among other things). The Finnish y is a close front rounded vowel (see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Close_front_rounded_vowel), like the German ü or French u. This vowel sound doesn't exist in English.
I realize that. I was trying to simplfy it a bit because the sound doesn't exist in English.
