We use Tana/Tano for people with an Italian surname or as a nn for those with Italian names. For example:

Gordon Ramsay's (the chef) wife is called Tana. According to a few sources online her real name is Cayetana, a name I've not come across before but according to Wikipedia is the name of the Duchess of Alba, who is Spanish.

This is how a friend used to say Tanya when he was little. TAN-a instead of TAN-ya.

I know a Tana who pronounces her name like tan-uh not tan-yah. It's nmsaa.

I also know a girl named Tana (pron. Tawn-uh)
I'm not sure if that's how your friend's is pronounced, or if it's a different spelling for Tanya.

Phonetically I wouldn't assume it sounded like Tanya. But it could be TAY-nah, TAN-nah or TAH-nah. Can't say I care for it no matter how you say it, though. Makes me think of tanning or someone with an accent saying Tanner. :b

I used to know a Tana. She spelled it the same way and pronounced it tan-a

I have seen it spelled Tawna. Could Tana be short for another longer name?
